1 time per week for module 1 to 4 then 15 days later for module 5

The aim of this course is to provide a professional approach to personal, social, societal, cultural and political subjects with a view to becoming a documentary photographer or entering the field of documentary photography.
Documentary photography involves the creative interpretation of reality through images captured from real life. It employs a storytelling approach based on a series of still images accompanied by text, structured in a creative and accurate dramatic form. This course aims to explore documentary photography, offering participants a unique and artistic approach to storytelling, addressing in-depth stories, and shedding light on various societal issues.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
Apply photography skills to address social, cultural, and political topics.
Create and convey realistic stories using a combination of pictures and text.

Lecturer
The course offers:
  • A structured approach in which you will learn about the importance of message in documentary photography.

  • Practical application of theoretical knowledge through personal assignments.
  • Tools for channelling participants' ideas into a personal narrative.
  • Practical exercises to understand different photographic narratives.

  • The analysis of narrative editing through text and image.

  • Regular exchanges and feedback from a facilitator throughout the course.

Documentary photography: its place in history

  • The relationship with reality: the question of the message
  • Elements of evolution: context, techniques, the message throughout history
  • A contextual approach: focusing on the work of documentary photographers

Module 2

The relationship between image and text

  • The image, the image/text equation: the question of narrative
  • The different media at the service of narrative (images, writing, video, audio, etc.)
  • Linking different media to create a narrative
  • Identifying and managing the obstacles/risks associated with these interactions and finding solutions
  • The event and the message: building the story.

Module 3

Building the story by gathering information for photographic documentation

  • A reminder of the elements and approach to storytelling
  • Participants present their ideas for a mini-photo story.

Module 4

Ensuring the visual and editorial treatment of the story

  • Setting up the story: the message, the visual composition and the photographic angle
  • Making the right choices for mini photo stories: the message, the visual composition and the photographic angle
  • Implementation: each person's roadma

Module 5

Presentation of final projects

  • Presentation of the final project by each participant and discussion
  • Summary of the course
With this course:
  • You will identify the relevance of different techniques to the projects being pursued and create realistic stories using images and text.
  • - You will analyse the stories of the most representative photographers in documentary photography.

  • You will become familiar with the criteria for assessing photographic work, while mastering the grammar of photographic language.
